Happy Birthday Ron McKernan - September 8

Nobody else could ever sing "Turn on Your Lovelight" the way you did. I will always remember the late, late Lovelight jams at the Fillmore (remember, the Dead would hit midnight with "Turn on Your Lovelight" and play it for forty five minutes or so it seemed and I would be dancing in the crowd and see my father come to collect me so I'd run backstage and hide until he gave up (God, I was a trial back then).
And I will always remember September 8, 1970, your birthday and the first time I went to dinner with Rex Jackson at Tia Margarita. After dinner, we went back to his place and he showed me some great photos of you. I hope you all are having fun up there, old friends... I think I will dig out "Live Dead" and play it this morning.

You beat me to it - I was about to post a happy birthday.

Best friend I ever had in that collective. He hid me from the cops in an amp case at the Queens College gig, the night about eighty bajillion people showed up after my sister's story on the Dead compared a gig to a "eucharistic ritual'.

I hope he's been reincarnated as someone or something that has a hundred years of solid fun, and a healthy liver. I miss him, damn it.
